A joueur exceptionnel, salaire exceptionnel.

On November 29, 1899, Hans Gamper founded Futbol Club Barcelona, along with eleven other enthusiasts of 'foot-ball', a game that was still largely unknown in this part of the world.
He could never have imagined the magnitude of what that initiative would eventually develop into. Over more than one hundred years of history, FC Barcelona has grown spectacularly in every area and has progressed into something much greater than a mere sports club, turning Barça’s ‘more than a club’ slogan into a reality.
Barça has become, for millions of people all around the world, a symbol of their identity, and not just in a sporting sense, but also in terms of society, politics and culture. Throughout the most difficult of times, Barça was the standard that represented Catalonia and the Catalan people's desire for freedom, a symbolism that has continued to be closely linked to the idiosyncrasy of the Club and its members to this day. Within the context of Spain, Barça is seen as an open and democratic club. And all around the world, Barça is identified with caring causes, and most especially children through its sponsorship agreement with Unicef.
For a whole century, FC Barcelona has passed through moments of glory and pain, periods of brilliance and other less successful ones, epic victories and humbling defeats. But all these different moments have helped define the personality of a Club that, due to its peculiar nature, is considered unique in the world.
With over one hundred years of history, there have naturally been many different periods, both in a social and a sporting sense. In the early years (1899-1922) , from the foundation of the club to the construction of Les Corts stadium, Barça was a club that had to distinguish itself from all the other football teams in Barcelona, to the point that it would come to be identified with the city as a whole. Barça soon became the leading club in Catalonia, and also associated itself with the increasingly growing sense of Catalan national identity.
From Les Corts to the Camp Nou (1922-1957), the club went through contrasting periods. Its membership reached 10,000 for the first time, while football developed into a mass phenomenon and turned professional, and these were the years of such legendary figures as Alcántara and Samitier. But due to material difficulties and the political troubles of the Spanish Civil War and post-war period, the club was forced to overcome several adverse circumstances, including the assassination of president Josep Sunyol in 1936, the very person who had propagated the slogan ‘sport and citizenship'. But the club survived, and a period of social and sporting recovery materialised in the form of the Camp Nou, coinciding with the arrival of the hugely influential Ladislau Kubala.
From the construction of the Camp Nou to the 75th anniversary (1957-1974) , Barça suffered mediocre results but was consolidated as an entity, with a constantly increasing membership and the slow but steady recovery, in the face of adversity, of its identity. A very clear sensation that was manifested for the first time ever in the words ‘Barça, more than a club’ proclaimed by president Narcís de Carreras. The board presided by Agustí Montal brought a player to Barcelona who would change the history of the club, Johan Cruyff.
From the 7th anniversary to the European Cup (1974-1992) the club saw the conversion of football clubs to democracy, the start of Josep Lluís Núñez’s long presidency, the extension of the Camp Nou on occasion of the 1982 World Cup and the Cup Winners Cup triumph in Basle (1979), a major success not just in a sporting sense but also in a social one, with an enormous and exemplary expedition of Barça supporters demonstrating to Europe the unity of the Barcelona and Catalan flags. Cruyff returned, this time as coach, and created what would come to be known as the 'Dream Team' (1990-1994), whose crowning glory was the conquest of the European Cup at Wembley (1992), thanks to Koeman’s famous goal.
From Wembley to Paris (1992-2006) was when the club’s most recent developments occurred in between its two greatest achievements, becoming champions of Europe. Josep Lluís Núñez’s long presidency came to and end, and the club displayed its finest potential during the celebrations of the club Centenary. Following on from Joan Gaspart (2000-2003), the June 2003 election brought Joan Laporta into office, and the start of new social expansion, reaching 150,000 members, and more successes on the pitch, including two league titles and the Champions League won in Paris.
The grandeur of Futbol Club Barcelona is explained, among many other factors, by its impressive honours list. Very few clubs anywhere in the world have won so many titles. The Intercontinental Cup is the only major football trophy that has never made its way into the club museum, where the club's greatest pride and joy remain the two European Cups won at Wembley (1992) and in Paris (2006).
These were Barça's finest hours on the continental stage, but the Club also has the honour of being the only one to have appeared in every single edition of European club competition since the tournaments were first created back in 1955. Barcelona's many achievements in Europe include being considered 'King of the Cup Winners Cup', having won that title a record four times.
In addition, FC Barcelona also won three Fairs Cups (the tournament now known as the UEFA Cup) in 1958, 1960 and 1966. In 1971, Barça won that trophy outright in a match played between themselves, as the first ever winners of the competition, and Leeds United, as the last. But Barça not only rules in Europe, but also in Spanish competitions, specifically in the national cup, the Copa del Rey, which they have won 24 times, more than any other club.
The Spanish League has traditionally been one of the competitions Barcelona has found the hardest to win, but especially thanks to some wonderful seasons in the 1990s, a decade when six championships were won, and two more championships in the last two years, Fútbol Club Barcelona has now won 18 Spanish League titles.

Laporta impressed by example set by Guardiola
Carles Cascante (enviat especial) / Roger Bogunyà
Laporta has spoken from the USA about the importance of the game at San Mamés. The Barça president hopes the international break “hasn’t broken the good run of form the team was having” and considers Guardiola’s humility to be the standard to follow.
Although he is in the United States with the basketball team, where he has several institutional duties to deal with, President Joan Laporta spoke to Barça TV and www.fcbarcelona.cat about the latest issues regarding the football team, who return to competition this Sunday at San Mamés.
“Sport is also important”

Laporta made it clear that it is sporting achievements that matter most. “The organisation and the club have shown they have a life to get on with (now in the USA) but we cannot forget how important football is to our club. On Sunday we have an important game in Bilbao against Athletic Club. It is our responsibility to present a good image of ourselves around the world, but sport is also important.”
Pleased with team performances

Speaking about the way things are going for Guardiola and his team, the president admitted he is very pleased with the results so far. “I have a lot of faith in Guardiola’s team and I’m very satisfied, but right now I think we all have to continue sharing humility that Guardiola himself has been displaying in recent weeks.”
Suffering and humility
He added that “now is the time to make an effort, to work together and now is the time to know how to suffer, to try to reach the moments we can enjoy. Right now we have to work responsibly and with humility, and there are no easy games. That’s something that needs to be made clear. I’d like things to continue progressing as they have done in recent weeks and hope the international break has not broken the team’s good rhythm.”

Hleb back, Gudjohnsen out
www.fcbarcelona.cat
FC Barcelona were given one piece of good news and one piece of bad news on Thursday as Aliaksandr Hleb was given the green light to return to playing again, but Eidur Gudjohnsen was ruled out of the team’s next two matches.
A month an three days after picking up a knock against Racing Club de Santander, Hleb has been given the all clear by the club’s medical services to start playing again. The Belarusian missed the Blaugrana’s six consecutive victories, but is now ready to return to action this weekend and be included in the squad to face Athletic Bilbao on Sunday.
Missing Bilbao and Basle
The bad news is that Gudjohnsen is set to miss the game in Bilbao and the Champions League encounter against Basle in midweek. The Icelandic international underwent tests after picking up a knock on international duty and it has been confirmed that he has a slight tear in a muscle in his left leg. On Friday he will undergo a further set of exams to determine precisely what is wrong and then begin a recovery programme.

During Iceland’s 1-0 victory against Macedonia on Wednesday, Gudjohnsen played the opening 81 minutes before being substituted. In recent matches the 30-year-old has been an influential figure in Barça’s victories, especially when he netted the winner against Real Betis and one of the six goals against Atlético de Madrid.

Eto’o goal takes points at San Mames (0-1)

Jordi Clos
Barca chalked up their fifth run on the trot in the league at San Mames this evening thanks to a second half goal from Samuel Eto’o. Guardiola’s men worked hard for their win improving as the game went on and never really giving Bilbao a chance.
This was an important victory and stretched Barca’s run to seven straight wins in all competitions. Both teams tried to impose their contrasting styles on the game, but it was Barca who came out on top. It wasn’t a particularly pretty first half but Eto’o’s goal after a great pass from Henry gave Barca the points in a much brighter second period.
Two styles clash
It was a real clash of styles between Bilbao’s route one football centered on the big centre forward Llorente as their main reference point and Barca’s more thoughtful possession football. It wasn’t easy for the visitors to impose their passing game early on as the Basques put on the pressure and it was Valdes who was soon in the action, keeping out a well hit third minute effort from David Lopez.
Early exchanges
Barca were not slow to reply however, and Eto’o forced a good stop from Iraizoz in the Bilbao goal on 9 minutes with a turn and shot from the edge of the box, Iniesta, who was playing on the right side of attack tried his luck soon after with a left foot strike that flew just over the bar. But just as Guardiola’s team looked most comfortable things turned sour with Keita forced off with a nasty looking injury to be replaced by Busquets. Yeste nearly added to their woes with a great free kick that Valdes turned away for a corner.
Midfield battle
Barca’s midfield was now formed by Busquets, Touré Yaya and Víctor Sánchez – a trio that proved a very tough nut to crack for Bilbao, who lacked the creativity to overcome their hardworking rivals. The second half closed with another chance for Barca when Iraizoz made a great stop to deny an Eto’o effort from close in after a corner.
Eto’o on target again
The second half looked to be off to a brighter start when Iniesta broke down the wing and crossed for Victor Sanchez to shoot and it was the Spanish international who sparked the improvement, dropping deeper as Barca gradually intensified their control and increased their possession further up the field. The increasing domination bore fruit on 63 minutes when Henry cut inside from deep leaving his markers flailing behind him and slipped in a lovely through ball which Eto’o latched onto with his left to fire home an unstoppable volley,
Barca in control
Bilbao were rocking now and Amorebieta very nearly turned an Iniesta cross into his own net and as the home side desperately pushed forward and left gaps at the back Eto’o could have made it two on 81 minutes, but he shot wide with just the keeper to beat. However the miss didn’t matter in the end as Barca controlled the final few minutes to chalk up their seventh successive win.

Chance for nine out of nine

Roger Bogunyà
Barça will be in Basel tonight (20.45, live on Canal + 2 and R@dio Barça) seeking their third win in a row in the CL. A win would make second round qualification an almost mathematical certainty and would also put Barça on good course for top spot.
It will be odd to see FC Barcelona playing a side that wears its own colours tonight on the turf of the Saint Jakob-Park in Basel. It has often been theorized that Joan Gamper used the Basel kit as inspiration for Barça’s now world famous strip, and as the home side, it will Basel that wear them tonight, while Barça will be donning yellow. The Swiss side is still looking for their first points in Group C.
Continuing the winning streak

The challenge for Guardiola’s side is to continue a winning run that has already seen them string together five league and two Champions League victories. Barça are also looking to complete the first half of their Champions League group with maximum points, something they have not done since the 2002/03 season, when Louis van Gaal was on the bench.
Missing Keita
Barça’s morale is on a high, but some key players will be missing. Milito, Pedro and Gudjohnsen were already out, but on Sunday, Keita’s name was added to the injury list, and he is expected to be on the sidelines for the next fortnight. This will be the first game of the whole season in which the Malian will play no part.
Basel co-leaders in Switzerland

Basel are currently joint top of the Swiss championship, side by side with Zurich on 25 points. The side managed by Christian Gross is also going well in the cup, where last Friday they ensured passage into the last sixteen. But their European campaign has not been quite so bright. They have yet to register a point, and defeat tonight will leave them in a very tight spot indeed.
P.s: On May 16, 1979, Basel was the venue for the European Cup Winners Cup Final between FC Barcelona and Fortuna Düsseldorf. Barça, managed that night by Quimet Rifé, took the title after a thrilling 4-3 victory over the German outfit.
The Basel v Barça match will be refereed by Holland’s Eric Braamhaar. He will be assisted from the touchlines by his compatriots Patrick Gerritsen and Wilco Lobbert.

Basel v Barça:
Did you now …???
Jordi Clos

Both the histories of FC Basel and FC Barcelona are closely related through their origins. The ties between the Catalan and Swiss teams were made even stronger by Barça’s Cup Winners Cup win in 1979.
- Barça’s founder, Joan Gamper, was a player and member of FC Basel in 1896. This may be why both clubs share the same colours and the same FCB initials.
- The first two games between the Catalan and Swiss sides were played at Christmas 1916. They played at the old Carrer Indústria ground, and both sides won a game each, both 3-1.
- FC Barcelona have never met Basel in an official match, but they did face a Basel Select XI in the Fairs Cup of 1958/59. The Swiss side featured players from FC Basel and Concordia, and it was Barça, then coached by Helenio Herrera, who went through, 7-3 on aggregate.

That was Barça’s first game at the Saint Jakob Stadium, where 20 years later they would play in a game that has never been forgotten by the club’s fans. The date was May 16, 1979, when Barça won their first Cup Winners Cup by beating Fortuna Düsseldorf 4-3 in extra time, watched by no fewer than 30,000 travelling Barça fans.
- But a decade earlier, FC Barcelona had also played in a Cup Winners Cup Final at the same venue, where they lost to Slovan Bratislava.
- Barça have not played a Swiss club since 1968, when one of their Cup Winners Cup opponents was FC Lugarno.
- The legendary Saint Jakob Stadium was knocked down in 1998 and since March 2001 the same site has been the home to the more modern Saint Jakob Park.

30 years after the historic CWC final, Barça return to Saint Jakob to face FC Basel in the third game of the Champions League group stage. Both teams come into the game in contrasting situations: The Swiss have lost both games played to date, while the Catalans have clocked up two wins.
- Before the start of the third set of games, Leo Messi was the second highest goalscorer in the tournament with two goals, while Xavi Hernández is leader in assists, also with two.
- Christian Gross’ side is the current Swiss league and cup champion, and this is the first time in five years that they have reached the group stage.
- Their biggest star is the Swiss of Turkish origin Eren Derdiyok. Aged just 19 years, he had an excellent Euro 2008 and was one the main reasons Basel came through the qualifying rounds.
- The game is being played at the same time as the ATP Indoor tennis tournament in the same city. Local hero and FC Basel fan Roger Federer began his campaign this Tuesday against the USA’s Bobby Reynolds.

Moi j'adore les équipes qui ne plaisante pas même lors d'une séance d'entrainements. Quand tu joues contre une telle équipe tu la respecte en jouant à fond et en marquant à chaque fois que l'occasion se présente.
